Meniscus Tear Surgery in Turkey

The meniscus — a C-shaped fibrocartilage cushion in the knee — is one of the most commonly injured structures in the body. A meniscus tear causes pain, swelling and mechanical symptoms (locking or catching). Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Aydın always prioritises tissue-preserving meniscus repair over removal, using the latest all-inside suture devices.

1. What Is Meniscus Tear Surgery?

Meniscus surgery is performed arthroscopically through two 5mm portals. The type of surgery depends on the tear:

  • Meniscus repair: The tear is sewn back together with non-absorbable sutures using all-inside or inside-out devices. The meniscus is preserved in its entirety. Best results in the outer (red) vascular zone.
  • Partial meniscectomy: The torn fragment is removed and the remaining meniscus trimmed to a smooth, stable rim. Used for avascular zone tears that cannot be repaired.

2. Symptoms

  • Sharp pain along the inner or outer joint line of the knee
  • Locking — inability to fully straighten or bend the knee
  • Clicking or catching sensation during movement
  • Swelling that recurs after activity
  • MRI confirms tear type, location and associated injuries

3. The Operation

Duration: 30–50 minutes  |  Hospital stay: Day case (trimming) / 1 night (repair)

Surgery is performed under spinal anaesthesia. A camera is introduced through one portal and instruments through the other. The meniscus tear is assessed and the most appropriate technique applied. Associated cartilage damage or ACL injuries are addressed simultaneously.

4. Recovery

  • Trimming: Walk the same day, crutches for 3–5 days, return to sport at 6–8 weeks.
  • Repair: Partial weight bearing for 4 weeks, progressive physiotherapy, return to sport at 4–6 months.

A detailed physiotherapy programme is provided for your UK physiotherapist to follow at home.

5. UK vs. Turkey

+
Trimming (meniscectomy): fly 2–3 days after surgery. Repair: fly 4–5 days after surgery.

Repair or removal — how is the decision made?

Will I need a brace after meniscus surgery?

+
A hinged knee brace is worn for 4–6 weeks after repair. No brace is required after trimming.

How long is recovery after meniscus repair?

Trimming: full recovery 4–6 weeks. Repair: protected weight bearing for 4 weeks, full recovery at 3–4 months.
